BAK VorTrak Tonneau Cover – Retractable Truck Bed Cover

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…4.8Β· thousands of reviews

We designed the BAK VorTrak tonneau cover for truck owners who demand full bed access without sacrificing security. This retractable cover features a sealed aluminum canister that stores the cover flush with your bed rails, giving you 100% cargo room when open and total lockable protection when closed.

The VorTrak runs on aircraft-grade aluminum rails with a proprietary track system that eliminates binding and jamming. Our matte black powder-coated slats resist UV damage and denting, while the integrated water management channels keep your cargo dry in any weather. Installation takes about an hour with common hand tools and requires no drilling on most truck models.

Track System and Operation

The VorTrak’s rail assembly uses a dual-track configuration machined from 6061-T6 aluminum extrusion. Each track houses stainless steel ball bearings that support the sliding cover assembly, distributing weight evenly across the bed rails and eliminating the side-to-side play common in single-track designs.

Opening the cover requires a single motion: unlock the tailgate latch, pull the release handle, and slide the cover toward the cab. The canister automatically coils the slats as you retract, maintaining constant tension through a spring-loaded spool mechanism. Closing reverses the process with an audible click when the lock cylinder engages.

Weather Sealing and Drainage
Sizing & fit

Weather Sealing and Drainage

We engineer the VorTrak with a three-stage water barrier. The primary seal runs along the perimeter of each slat edge, creating compression contact with the adjacent slat and the side rails. A secondary bulb seal lines the canister opening where the cover retracts, preventing water intrusion when the bed is fully closed.

Rainwater that does reach the rails flows into molded drainage channels built into the underside of each extrusion. These channels route water toward the rear corners of the bed, away from cargo and stake pocket openings. In testing with a commercial spray booth calibrated to simulate 2 inches of rainfall per hour, we measured less than 50ml of water intrusion over a 30-minute cycle.

Styling

Load Capacity and Slat Construction

Each slat measures 1.5 inches thick and spans the full width of the bed with zero gaps. We extrude the slats from 5052 aluminum alloy, which offers better impact resistance than the 3003 alloy used in economy covers. The powder coat finish adds a 3-mil protective layer that withstands rock chips and prevents the white oxidation common on bare aluminum.

The 300-lb distributed load rating assumes weight spread across at least three slats. We’ve tested centered point loads up to 150 lbs without permanent deformation, but concentrated weight on a single slat may cause temporary bowing. For hauling lumber or kayaks that extend beyond the bed length, we recommend placing a foam pad between the cargo and the cover surface to distribute pressure.

Smoothest retract I’ve used
I installed this on my 2022 Silverado last month and the operation is noticeably smoother than the competitor cover on my old F-150. No catching or hesitation when I pull it open, and the canister sits perfectly flush with the bed rails. The matte finish looks sharp and hasn’t shown any scratches yet despite daily use.

Actually keeps water out
We had three straight days of rain right after I installed the VorTrak, and I expected at least some moisture in the bed. Checked the cargo area after each storm and found it bone dry. The drainage system works exactly as advertised. I haul tools for work and finally have a cover I can trust.

Installation took patience but worth it
The clamp system is solid once you get everything lined up, but I spent about 90 minutes on install because I had to adjust the rail spacing twice to get it square. Once it was set, though, the cover operates perfectly and the fit is tight. No regrets on the purchase.

Full bed access is a game changer
I haul furniture and building materials every weekend, and having 100% bed access without removing the cover saves me so much hassle. The VorTrak retracts completely out of the way in under ten seconds, and I can still lock it down when I’m carrying smaller loads that don’t need the full bed length.

Holds up to highway speeds
I drive about 400 miles a week on the interstate and the VorTrak hasn’t developed any wind noise or flutter. The slats stay tight even at 75 mph, and I haven’t noticed any fuel economy drop compared to running the bed open. The aerodynamic design actually seems to help.

Key integration worked on my Ram
I was skeptical about the key matching claim, but my 2020 Ram 1500 key fits the VorTrak lock cylinder perfectly. One less key on my ring and one less thing to worry about when I’m loading gear in a hurry. The lock engages with a satisfying click every time.

Good to know

Common Questions About the VorTrak Tonneau Cover

Yes, but you’ll need a compatible rack system designed to mount over retractable covers. Our VorTrak Rack System includes crossbars that attach to reinforced mounting points on the canister and side rails without drilling. Standard bed racks that clamp to the bed rails will interfere with the cover’s operation.

The rack system is rated for 150 lbs of rooftop cargo when the cover is fully closed. Do not install ladder racks or heavy-duty contractor racks that exceed the cover’s 300-lb distributed load capacity.

Wash the cover with automotive soap and a soft microfiber cloth or sponge. Rinse with low-pressure water and dry with a chamois to prevent water spots on the matte finish. Avoid automatic car washes with rotating brushes, which can scratch the powder coat.

For stubborn dirt or tree sap, use isopropyl alcohol on a cloth rather than abrasive cleaners. Apply a UV protectant spray formulated for matte finishes twice a year to maintain the color. Do not use tire shine or silicone-based products on the slats, as they attract dust.

The VorTrak’s lock cylinder secures the cover itself but does not lock your tailgate. If your truck has a factory tailgate lock or you’ve installed an aftermarket lock, those systems operate independently of the tonneau cover.

For complete bed security, we recommend using both the VorTrak lock and a tailgate lock. This prevents access to the bed from both the cover opening and the tailgate drop, which is especially important if you store tools or equipment overnight.

Yes, the VorTrak can stop at any point during retraction to accommodate cargo of varying heights. Pull the cover back until you have the clearance you need, then leave it in that position. The tension system holds the cover in place without additional latches.

For cargo taller than about 18 inches, you may need to retract the cover fully to avoid placing pressure on the slats. Cargo that extends above the bed rails will contact the cover if you try to close it, so measure your load height before deciding how far to retract.

Our limited lifetime warranty covers structural defects in the rails and canister but does not cover impact damage from collisions or falling objects. If a slat panel is dented or a rail is bent in an accident, we sell individual replacement components rather than requiring you to replace the entire system.

Most body shops can remove the VorTrak in under 30 minutes if they need access to the bed area for repairs. Reinstallation uses the same clamp system, so you won’t need new hardware unless the original clamps are damaged.

Independent testing shows the VorTrak can improve highway fuel economy by 1-2% compared to an open bed, thanks to its low-profile aerodynamic design. The sealed canister and flush-mounted rails create less drag than most hard folding covers.

Your actual results will vary based on driving speed, truck model, and payload. Trucks with lifted suspensions or larger tires may see smaller gains. The matte black finish also reduces heat absorption compared to glossy covers, which can help if you haul temperature-sensitive cargo in summer.

The VorTrak operates in temperatures down to -20Β°F, though you may notice slightly stiffer retraction in extreme cold as the lubricant in the track system thickens. We recommend brushing heavy snow off the cover before attempting to open it, as the weight can add resistance to the retraction mechanism.

The powder-coated aluminum resists rust and corrosion from road salt. After winter driving, rinse the underside of the rails and the canister opening to remove salt buildup. The drainage channels prevent ice dams from forming along the bed rails in freezing rain.
