BAKFlip FiberMax Tonneau Cover

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

Our BAKFlip FiberMax brings fiber-reinforced polymer panels to the folding tonneau category. Each panel pairs a solid FRP core with aluminum bracing, creating a rigid cover that stands up to snow loads and still folds completely out of the way when you need full bed access.

The matte finish won’t scratch your truck’s paint, and the panels lock in any position along the rails. We designed the FiberMax for drivers who need both security and the flexibility to haul tall cargo without removing the entire cover.

FRP construction and weather resistance

The bakflip fibermax tonneau uses a fiber-reinforced polymer core that delivers rigidity without the weight penalty of steel. Each panel measures just over an inch thick but resists flexing even under highway wind loads. We sandwich the FRP between a textured top layer and a felt underside that contacts your bed rail without scratching.

The automatic latching system creates a compression seal at the tailgate and along each fold line. Water channels run the perimeter to divert rain away from the bed seam. In freeze-thaw testing, the hinges and latches cycled through 500 open-close repetitions without binding or requiring lubrication.

Folding access and load capacity
Sizing & fit

Folding access and load capacity

The tri-fold hinge design lets you open one, two, or all three panels depending on cargo height. A leaf spring mechanism holds each panel upright against the cab when fully opened, giving you the same clearance as a completely removed cover. The panels lock in place with rubber pads that grip the side rails, so you can secure a partial opening for mid-height loads.

We rate the FiberMax at 400 pounds evenly distributed across the surface. That capacity covers snow accumulation in most climates and supports gear storage on top of the cover. The aluminum bracing runs lengthwise under each panel to distribute point loads, though we recommend spreading weight with a cargo pad if you’re mounting accessories.

Installation and bed rail fit

Clamp-on mounting

The FiberMax installs with clamps that hook under your truck’s bed rail lip. You position the front header against the bulkhead, then tighten eight adjustment bolts to lock the rails in place. The system works on most full-size trucks with factory bed rails, and the clamps adjust fore-aft to account for variations in rail positioning.

Compatibility notes

The cover fits beds with or without bed liners, though you’ll use different clamp spacers depending on liner thickness. If you’re running a spray-in liner, the standard clamps work as-is. Drop-in liners require spacer shims included in the kit. The tailgate seal compresses to match tailgate variations, but aftermarket spoilers or caps may interfere with the rearmost panel’s closing angle.

Perfect for snow country
I needed something that could handle Montana winters without cracking. The FiberMax held up to a foot of snow twice this season and the panels didn’t sag. Opening it in freezing temps was easier than I expected.

Solid upgrade from vinyl
Switched from a soft cover and the difference in security is huge. I can lock tools in the bed overnight now. Install took about 45 minutes in my driveway with basic hand tools.

★★★★★
Great build quality
The panels feel substantial and the hinges are smooth. Only knock is the matte finish shows water spots more than I’d like, but a quick wipe fixes it. Worth the investment.

Love the partial open feature
Being able to prop just one or two panels open is more useful than I thought. I haul lumber often and this lets me secure the front section while leaving the back accessible.

No paint damage after a year
I was worried about scratches on my new truck’s bed rails. After 14 months the felt lining hasn’t left a mark. The cover stays put even on rough roads.

Solid value for FRP construction
Compared pricing on several brands and this hit the sweet spot. The composite material is tougher than I expected and the finish quality is commercial-grade.

Good to know

Common questions about the FiberMax

Yes, the standard clamps accommodate spray-in liners without modification. The clamp hooks sit under the bed rail lip, and the adjustable bolts let you fine-tune the fit. For drop-in liners thicker than a quarter inch, use the included spacer shims to maintain proper rail alignment.

The FiberMax sits just over an inch above the bed rail when closed. Most truck beds retain 18 to 20 inches of interior height depending on your cab and bed configuration. When fully opened and propped against the cab, the cover takes up roughly 12 inches of bed length, leaving the remaining space completely clear.

The cover is designed for highway use when fully closed or fully open against the cab. We don’t recommend highway speeds with panels in intermediate positions, as wind lift can stress the hinges. For short drives at neighborhood speeds, locking one panel upright works fine.

It depends on the toolbox placement. The cover needs clearance along the bed rails where the side rails mount, so crossover toolboxes that sit behind the cab typically work. Side-mount toolboxes interfere with the rail clamps. Measure your toolbox footprint and compare it to the rail installation zone before ordering.

We back the FiberMax with a three-year warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. That includes the FRP panels, aluminum frame components, hinges, and latches. Normal wear items like the felt underside and rubber seals aren’t covered, but they’re available as replacement parts if needed.

The composite construction absorbs minor impacts better than aluminum without permanent denting. We’ve tested the panels with simulated hail up to one inch diameter, and they showed surface marks but no structural cracks. Larger impacts like heavy tree limbs can fracture FRP, so park under cover when possible during severe weather.

The FiberMax isn’t designed for roof-rack-style loads. The 400-pound capacity assumes evenly distributed static weight, not the dynamic stress of a rack system. If you need to carry bikes or kayaks, consider bed extenders that clamp to the tailgate and don’t load the cover panels directly.
